God is in Control
June 1, 2019
It is the first day of the month and sometimes I feel hopefule about things when there is a new month. It is also Saturday and we like to go out to the park on Saturday when the weather is nice. Recently, my mobility has been hard because of my leg muscles and today was especially hard. For seven years now, I have been in this mysterious condition and no one so far has any answers. I have prayed and fasted, and hundreds of people have prayed for me over these seven years, but there has been no improvement. Recently, like today, it has felt real discouraging.
I have been going through the Gospel of Luke recently and came upon the second chapter of Luke today. I have read this story many times but a certain part stood out to me today.
1And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered.
2 This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria.
3 So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city.
4 Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David,
5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child.
6 So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered.
7 And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. (Luke 2:1-7)
There are several problems here for Joseph and Mary. They had no power to go against this decree, and so they had to go register. First of all verse 4 says they went out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem. They have to travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem, which is a trip of about 80 miles. That seems like nothing for us today with cars, that trip can be made in an hour and a half. It would take Joseph and Mary several days to make that journey. This would be a hard journey for “normal people” but remember Mary is pregnant and almost about to deliver the child. Other people needed to register for the census as well and that is why we read in verse 7 that there was no room for them in the inn, all the rooms were full, they got there much later than everyone else.
So Joseph and Mary, two young teenagers have no place to stay, Mary gives birth and the child is placed in a feeding trough. We do not have any detail of what either of them were thinking or what they said, but all we know is that they made the best of their situation.
Sometimes life is like that, sometimes it seems like God is distant, people in positions make laws that effect everyone, and these laws make life difficult for many, but instead of complain, the best thing to do is to make the best of the situation. Certainly, many times this is not easy, and we need God’s strength and wisdom day by day.
Father in Heaven, thanks for the story of Joseph and Mary and their situation. We see here that it was not easy for them. Sometimes we can lose sight that You are in control, but please help us to see that You are in control. Please give us wisdom and strength to thrive in our situation and in walking day by day with You.
