Doing Our Best Even When No One Is Watching
February 2, 2019
I have worked for and volunteered at a number of organizations since college. I can remember my second full time job was one of my hardest experiences. There were times when I put in 12 hour days and sometimes did 60 hour weeks without overtime pay. I did assignments that no one else wanted to do. Near the end, I was almost at the point of burnout. It is hard to keep a positive perspective sometimes in that moment. There is a passage that comes to mind whenever I think of work:
23 In all the work you are doing, work the best you can. Work as if you were doing it for the Lord, not for people. 24 Remember that you will receive your reward from the Lord, which he promised to his people. You are serving the Lord Christ. (Colossians 3:23-24)
I am reminded to do the best I can, because I am working for a higher purpose and for a greater audience, that God watches and that God knows the quality of work and dedication that I put forth. I gained no recognition in that job, and felt very alone at times in that position. I thank God that He helped me get through that time, but it is important to remind myself, that even if there is no human recognition of a job well done, God will reward us either here on earth, or in the life to come. I am thankful for work that I enjoy and find meaningful and it is good always to keep a positive perspective each day.
Father in Heaven, sometimes it is hard to keep a positive perspective when work is hard. It is important to do our best even when it appears no one is watching. I thank You for work that is enjoyable and meaningful. Please give us all wisdom in working hard and creativity to make the most out of every opportunity.
