Finding Joy in Simple Things

Finding Joy in Simple Things
April 20, 2019

In the past several weeks, I have noticed random and simple moments where I sense how God notices what I am thinking and then something happens that amazes me about the kindness of God. This week that continues to happen, however the day was a significant day. Yesterday was my wedding anniversary and in the afternoon my wife and I went to a cafe that we sometimes go when it is hot. We order milk tea and enjoy a relatively quiet place. The owner is nice and so that makes the place nice to return to. After we got our drinks, the owner came out with a cup of ice cream and asked us to try. We were totally surprised as it was free and she had no idea it was our wedding anniversary. It was very good chocolate ice cream. This was a simple thing and in that moment I sense how God knew it was a special day for us. There is a verse I had thought about when I was dating and now married.

Enjoy life with your wife, whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun—all your meaningless days. For this is your lot in life and in your toilsome labor under the sun. (Ecclesiastes 9:9)

Life is short, and the writer who is King Solomon reminds us to enjoy life with the gift God has given to us. Enjoy life everyday with our wife. I think sometimes I find people in extremes. Some people are busy with work or ministry to really enjoy life and some people enjoy life a bit too much. That moment in the cafe was simple, and yet it was so enjoyable.

Reflection Question

In what ways can you take time to enjoy life with the people you love this week?

Prayer:

Father in Heaven, thanks for the people You have placed in our lives who mean a lot to us. Sometimes we forget to take time to enjoy life in the midst of being busy or thinking about different things. Please give us both wisdom and opportunity to enjoy simple and special moments with the people we love.
