Giving Thanks For Simple Things

Giving Thanks For Simple Things
March 9, 2019

It was confirmed two days ago that I will need to stay here longer. Since I came here 30 months ago, I have struggled with wanting to be here, and it has been hard. I have been trying to figure out how to live well in a place where it really does not feel like home. There was a moment that came earlier today that was one of those “God moments” that I have not had that much of that was a “smile from God” that was an opportunity to give thanks. There is a short verse I am reminded of:

In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. (1 Thessalonians 5:18)

I was reminded today to give thanks, even for simple and small things. We have probably visited this shopping center about 40 times since we got here, but today, there was a man selling boxes of mangos in the parking lot. We have never until today seen this person or anyone selling anything in the parking lot. The mangos were both good and cheap which is always a bonus. It might appear trivial at first glance, but it is something that I hold on to right now in a place where I have not found that much to be thankful for.

Reflection Question:

What simple and small thing are you thankful for today?

Prayer:

Father in Heaven, so often in the routine day to day activities of life, we miss the simple and small things that remind us that You are present with us and showing kindness. Please open our eyes to these moments that we have a greater awareness of Your love. I am thankful today to pause and recognize Your goodness even when it might seem trivial.
